Walk Among the Trees

The Captain and I wandered out to the Dawes Arboretum on Saturday. The weather was perfect, and because the rest of Ohio was enjoying their bread and circuses, we had the place to ourselves.

The arboretum started as an 1800’s 140 acre farm, grew into a family retreat, and then, in 1929, a preserve for trees. The Dawes family private foundation now maintains 2000 acres on gently rolling hills with 5300 species and 15,000 examples on the ground. There is also a modern visitor’s center, museum and 14 miles of walking trails.

If you find yourself with an extra sawbuck in your pocket, a nice day, and the ability to travel 45 minutes east of Columbus, it will be worth the effort.
