Cast of Characters

If you’ve ever watched an old movie, especially one filmed in black and white, you probably noticed all the credits are presented right up front. The story doesn’t begin until you sit through several minutes of themed music and scrolling names and titles. Call it the early Hollywood version of a theater company’s play bill. In the case of this blog, I thought it might be a good idea to similarly introduce some key characters.

The Captain……We met in college and got married in the Mater Dei Chapel at Mount St. Joe way back in 1992. She did 25 years in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy, with a tour on the U.S.S. Enterprise and three deployments to the “sandbox.” She’s now with a local civilian medical system, making life better for a lot of folks when they have their worst day ever.

The Kid……Our son. Since the English language doesn’t have a word for “grown adult male offspring who doesn’t reside with you and has his own life,” I’ll just keep referring to him as The Kid.

Brothers……There’s actually a bunch of them. They figure into a lot of stories.

Mom……She recently move to a senior community near the house where my brothers and I grew up. I visit her often. She plays piano, feeds The Dog under the table, and reads almost everything I write.

The Dog……Grace came to us from the Louisville Weimaraner Rescue in March of 2018. She was about five years old and already had a well developed personality. Now she’s a fixture in the house, barking at everybody who comes through the door.

The Boat……This might refer to the one we’re sailing now, or one of the two The Captain and I previously owned. Despite their status as inanimate objects, boats have personalites and are essentially family members.

Crew……They come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. Some even have real names.
